How Does a Photo Facial Work?

A Photo Facial or Fotofacial, restores and repairs the skin via Intense Pulsed Light or IPL technology. This is sometimes referred to as Broadband Light (BBL) as well. The technology penetrates the upper layers of skin with pulses of a specific wavelength of light that contribute thermal energy to deeper portions of the skin. This light then triggers therapeutic responses in the skin, causing it to regenerate and restore itself, rid itself of vein-generated redness, and minimize pores.

One of the benefits of IPL Photofacials is the long-term rejuvenation initiated by your body’s own healing mechanisms. This is because the IPL encourages the production of additional collagen. Collagen is the protein that maintains the skin’s structure and fortitude. Increased collagen production restores skin, improving tone and texture and diminishing fine lines and wrinkles.¹

Exposure to UV radiation ages the skin more than any other extrinsic factor. Common manifestations of sun damage include sunspots, freckles, or uneven skin tone. All three of these problems are the result of an over-accumulations of melanin, which is a type of pigment the body produces to protect the skin from sun damage. A Photo Facial targets and breaks down sun damage by utilizing a specific wavelength of light to target the dark pigment of the accumulated melanin underneath the skin’s surface. The melanin absorbs the thermal energy, causing it to heat up and shatter into smaller pieces. The shards of melanin are gradually absorbed by the body, causing the brown spot to fade from view.²

Photofacials generate thermal energy, which can clear up uneven changes in skin tone and reduce or eliminate vascular issues like broken capillaries, facial veins, or other vein-based blemishes. The thermal energy heats the blood vessels without harming the skin, which, with small capillaries, can destroy the entire capillary, or with larger veins, can shrink the vein while decreasing the redness. IPL Photo Rejuvenation is also effective at improving rosacea. ²

Photofacials also have a remarkable effect on acne. Scientific studies have demonstrated that IPL Photofacial thermal energy destroys the surface bacteria that are a common culprit of acne. The thermal energy also helps in regulating the sebaceous gland, responsible for producing the oily substance that coats the skin and which can also contribute to outbreaks of acne. IPL facials also minimize the visibility of your skin’s pores, which enhances the image of smooth and unblemished skin.³

At Avahlee Med Spa, the premier provider of Photofacials in Utah, we ensure that each of our patients receives a treatment plan customized to their specific needs. Individual treatment plans have a lot of benefit when working with IPL technology. We evaluate the specifics of your blemishes to better calibrate our machines and techniques to best target those issues. For instance, a wavelength that is best for addressing acne and scarring might not be as effective at treating pigmentation and spider veins. We can set up your treatment so that we treat each of your conditions in a single pass, thus shortening treatment time for our patients.

We use the Venus Versa machine with Smartpulse technology. It has options that make it especially good at targeting vascular and pigmented lesions. The Smartpulse technology ensures the energy delivery remains precise and consistent, and removes any potential for human error in pulse length. It also boasts a built-in real-time cooling system to ensure that all patients remain safe and comfortable during the procedure.

The Photo Facial procedure is effective at removing skin blemishes and pigmentation problems from all over the body. Many clients choose to have a Photofacial performed on their chest, neck, shoulders, hands, or legs, and the results in these regions are just as impressive as seen in photorejuvenation treatments in the facial region.

IPL technology can be specialized for each client’s unique situation and is great at tackling a wide array of skin problems. Because of this, individual pricing depends on the specifics of each case. During a free consultation, our skin care professionals cover our pricing in detail, and we strive to make a plan that both meets all your skin care goals and matches your budget. Call us at (801) 396-8217 today to learn about current promotions and great ways to save on Photofacial cost in Lehi, UT.

The Photo Facial procedure is non-invasive and most patients experience no pain during the procedure. Experiences can vary, but you should experience limited to no discomfort during the procedure.* In some sensitive areas, the administrator of the procedure may decide to employ a topical anesthetic, but in most cases, an anesthetic is totally unnecessary. Some clients describe a “rubber band snap” sensation, or a simple warming sensation.

This procedure has been cleared by the FDA as safe and effective. The method of treatment ensures that no harm is done to the skin by pulsing its laser beam. This allows thermal energy to penetrate the skin without harming the tissue. A sustained beam would cause more damage to the skin’s surface. Each patient receives a safety guard or goggles to use during the procedure to ensure their safety.
